Pitched Roof Over Deck

Roof deck framing unlike for decks at ground level doesn t entail a ledger attached to the rim joist of a house.

You have to make. Both have posts or columns that support a frame. Measure the sightline clearance height from the roof to the house not the other way around. You might want to use the same wood or something else.

Then run joists connecting the front of your roof with the rear every two feet along the length of your roof. Once you have your beams in place everything above them joists deck boards balusters and handrails is the same as for any other deck. Frame up a box the size of the outer dimensions of your deck using 2 by 4 inch lumber. Centers supported by a beam and a ledger as on most decks.

The difference comes in with the type and installation of the beams. You can either remove the eave or just keep it. Whenever i install decking over a roof i make sure the framing is structurally sound and properly pitched to drain water. Shed roofs project as a single plane roof pitched away from the house.

Porch decks require 25 additional psf for roof loads for a total of 80 psf. Using lag bolts and a screwdriver fasten the base of the posts to the ground. A deck on a sloped roof requires a different approach to the framing underneath the joists. When you start building your roof over the deck try and get some material that compliments the decking.

The project illustrated here was a complete teardown and rebuild so i framed the roof with 2x8s spaced on 16 in. Typical decks are designed to support 55 psf lbs per square foot. Installing a porch roof over an existing deck is usually not recommended unless the deck was originally designed to support a future porch. Instead a pair of beams rest on supports called sill plates to create a frame for the deck.

The minimum pitch for a roof is 1 4 12 which translates to 1 4 inch rise to 12 inches of run. A louvered patio roof is similar to a pergola. Then there are wooden beams that are evenly spaced over the frame to create the roof. Flat roofs are more susceptible to leaking than pitched roofs.

If you are tying the roof directly to a house wall you can install a ledger board with flashing and install rafter ties to attach the rafters at the appropriate angles or use engineered trusses. Measure the size of the beam that you are going to use. Treat it with the same products to give it a similar finish. Step 2 tie your existing deck posts into the roof by extending your corner posts with the 4 by 4 lumber.
